I sewed by hand simple curtains with coly/potton fabric and now want to make them thicker?
Our mortgage has us on a very limited budget, so I bought some beautiful fabric and hand-sewed very simple curtains with a thread and needle. I put them on very basic adjustable rods that mount in the window frame.
I want to make them thicker to block out light, etc. Any suggestions? I was going to buy more fabric and hand sew that on top, and I even saw that "black out" fabric that is especially for blocking out light, but my fabric is poly-cotton and not really heavy. We live in a warm climate so we will need some circulation from the open window.

I would suggest the only way to make your curtains look "fuller" is to put a lining on behind it. Linings create the illusion of a fuller and lustre curtain. This will also blockout the sun taking care of your sunlight probs.
There are lots of different linings you can put onto the back of your existing curtain. It depends on how much sunlight you want to come through, and what you want to do with the window.
Options are you can "tape attach" the lining. Put the Lining on Lining tape, and attach with the previous curtain hooks, onto the back of the tape on curtains. (is how you join easily the two together without remaking).
Another idea, is to have the lining on a separate track. Thus having sunlight protection when you need to, or pulling the linings back when you don't need it.

COATED LININGS
3 Pass Coated Lining (comes in cream, ivory, or white). Blockouts out 98% of the sunlight. This is the ULTIMATE in protection from the sunlight. It gives complete protection. However, once the curtains are closed, it really darkens the room, so take that into consideration. If you have a lot of heavy sunlight, I would get this option.
1 Pass Coated Lining (comes in cream, ivory or white).
Blockouts out 40% of the sunlight. This is good if you still want some light to filter through, but gives some good sun protection and some privacy. (you can't see through the fabric.)
(you can get Coated Linings as in either a Cotton Suede or a Polyester Suede - Cotton is a natural fibre while polyester is man made. Cotton always gives a matt look, while polyester has a bit more of a sheen to it.)

UNCOATED LININGS
Cotton continuous lining (this is just the base cloth only, and will only protect the curtain itself - it won't give light reduction from the sunlight. They tend to come in the colours, white and cream.
The cotton Lining is probably the cheapest option. This is a wear and tear type lining. It lasts up to 2 years. Once it wears out, you replace it with a new one. It's job is to protect the curtain only, and also give a bit of fullness look to the curtain.
Polyester Vista Lining (from Australia) from The Bricos Group (need to buy at your local curtain dealer). This is a good lining, it gives a nice sheen look adds fullness to your curtain, but doesn't stiffen to thick a nice uncoated fabric too much with that coated look.
The Vista Supreme Polyester Lining range is constructed of knitted, texturised 100% Polyester yarn. Polyester offers many benefits when compared with more traditional Linings, including high resistance to deterioration by the sun, total stability, mould and mildew resistance, crease resistance, excellent Ultra Violet protection and improved drapeability.
Vista Supreme provides a medium level, light filtering effect, enhancing all Curtain fabrics. The Neutral colour has been a particular success, ensuring that the subtle colours of many face fabrics are not altered by the colour of the Lining.

Other options:
If you don't want to go for a lining and you have a sheer or a see through fabric that is quite colourful, or an obvious colour.
Another suggestion is to pick a "curtain" fabric to enhance the existing curtain.
Eg. If you have a see through curtain that might be red. Sometimes it's nicer to put a curtain fabric behind (as a lining) that is also red, which enhances the original fabric. Instead of white or cream, which will change the colour.
I only suggest this on a fabric that might be see-through.
Yo can buy another "curtain fabric" that either comes as 1 Pass or 3 Pass coated, or you can just get it uncoated and line it with that.
You need to go into your local curtain shop and see what kind of linings, and curtain fabrics they have.
