is it possible to match the color pallet in the film American Graffiti using a video camera?
im making my first indie feature film
Yes and No... :-)
First, it depends on what format you are actually shooting on. The key is the latitude of color. When you take a picture with film stock, you're going to get a high-resolution picture with black-blacks and white-whites. In regard to color and shooting on film, you're going to get a broad latitude, but with video, you are going to get much much less latitude to play with so it is harder to manipulate.
With video the more you push the video the less it will stand up to being projected too. Is the indie feature just for the small screen or the big?
If you have any budget there are other alternatives. 2 perf 35mm cameras can bring your costs down considerably. The Camera Rental House at Film Industry Bloggers has a great blog about the cost of shooting 2 perf. Also check out The Digital Expert at the same site as he can recommend the best grading programs if you are going digital.
