5 x 7 envelopes are by far apart one of the most well used and well known varieties of of envelopes, and I believe that we all know what they are. But there is a lot more types of envelopes out there which are used for various purposes that you might not be aware of.
Weights of Envelopes
Envelopes are made in many different weights and thicknesses, and are weighed with a scale known as GSM, or Grams per square inch. This is the same method that is used to great paper. The thicker the paper or card, the higher the GSM number will be.
Sizes of Envelopes
There are a huge number of different sizes and varieties of envelopes and find them all listed in the international size system, commonly recognized as ISO.
Envelopes range in size from CO, being the largest, to C7 is the smallest. The most commonly used types of envelopes range in sizes from C4, C5 and DL. I am providing that you with a list below that describes many different varieties of envelopes. This list should help you decide which is the best way to send your documents, letters, and memos.
C4 Envelopes - These envelopes which measure 12 1/2" x 9" will hold an unfolded sheet of A4 paper. These envelopes are perfect for sending documents, brochures, and envelopes which cannot be folded.
C5 Envelopes - these envelopes which measure 9" x 6.3/8" will hold a sheet of A5 paper, or a sheet of A4 paper folded in half.
C6 Envelopes - These envelopes which measure 41/2" x 6 3/8" will hold a sheet of A4 paper folded double or a sheet of A5 paper which is folded in half.
DL Envelopes - These envelopes which measure 3 7/8" x 8 5/8" are able to contain an A4 sheet of paper folded twice or a sheet of A5 paper folded once.The DL envelope is the common type that is use to send letters.
Traditional 5 x 7 - This is the type of envelope that you will send a birthday card or a greeting card in. They come in many different colors and styles and are quite often custom made for individualistic applications.
Types of Envelopes
Gummed envelopes - This is the traditional type of envelope, which you have to lick before you close it.
Self Sealed Envelopes - there are two commonly used types of self sealed envelopes, they are press seal and peal and seal.
- Press Seal - This tyoe of envelope has a fold which you bend over and "press to seal" it.
- Peal and Seal - This is similar to the type of press seal envelope, but it has a strip which you have to remove in order to expose the glue, and then you just press it to seal it closed.
Plain Envelopes - plain envelopes are just simply that, plain envelopes. They don't have any window in them, so you have to write the address on them by hand. This allows for a very personal correspondence.
Windowed Envelopes - these are the envelopes that you get from medical bills and credit card bills which have the small window in them displaying the address. These envelopes are great for businesses that don't have the time to write everything out by hand.
Manila Envelopes - you normally consider a manila envelope to be one of the big envelopes with the metal pulled over tabs for closing, but this isn't true while those are Manila envelopes yes, Manila is simply referring to the color.
Board Backed Envelopes - these are the envelopes which have a piece of rigid cardboard in them which holds them stiff. They are perfect for sending photographs and documents that cannot be bent.
Padded Envelopes - these envelopes are perfect for sending items which you don't want to get damaged. Normally these envelopes are padded with a bubble lining, which works exceptionally well for sending fragile items such as CDs or DVDs.
Recycled Envelopes - most envelopes these days are made from paper supplies which have been recycled, so if you are concerned about the environmental impact of envelopes, you don't need to worry because most of them come from recycled material.
